Emim (Jewish)
A warlike tribe of "giants" of the ancient Canaanites, who were defeated by the Elamite king Chedorlaomer and his allies in the plain of Kiriathaim. In the time of Abraham they occupied the country east of Jordan, afterwards the land of the Moabites.1 They were, like the Anakim, reckoned among the Rephaim, and were conquered by the Moabites, who gave them the name of Emim, i.e., "terrible men." The Ammonites called them Zamzummim.
It would appear, from a comparison of Ge 14:5-7 with De 2:10-12,20-23, that the whole country east of Jordan was, in primitive times, held by a race of giants, all probably of the same stock, comprehending the Rephaim on the north, next the Zuzim, after them the Emim, and then the Horim on the south; and that afterwards the kingdom of Bashan embraced the territories.
