Enfield (Heraldic)
The enfield has the head of a fox, forelegs like an eagle's talons, the chest of a greyhound, the body of a lion, and the hindquarters and tail of a wolf. It is occasionally portrayed with wings. The Enfield is a type of chimera which combines the features of numerous animal shapes. In heraldry, it stood for subtlety, cunning, fierceness, and fortitude.
It is used as an emblem by some organisations in Enfield, London (on the arms of the London Borough of Enfield), but it is not sure whether it has any historic connection with the town. Some accounts state, the Enfield protected the bodies of fallen chieftains for proper burial. They are mainly associated with Ireland although records also place them in England. The Enfield is unquestionably Celtic and of great importance to its chieftains.
