Island Satyr (Medieval Bestiaries)
Island Satyr was a tribe of wild Satyroi inhabiting the Satyrides Islands, according to a sailor's tale, captured and horribly violated a female passenger when they made landfall. They ere rustic fertility spirits of the countryside and wilds. They consorted with the Nymphs and were companions of the gods Dionysos, Hermes, Hephaistos, Pan, Rhea-Kybele and Gaia.
Satyroi were depicted as animalistic men with ears and a tail resembling those of a horse, as well as a permanent, exaggerated erection. Early artistic representations sometimes include horse-like legs, but, by the sixth century BC, they were more often represented with human legs.
