Likho (Slavic)

Likho, liho, lykho is an embodiment of evil fate and misfortune in Slavic mythology, a creature with one eye, often depicted as an old, skinny woman in black (One-eyed Likho) or as an evil male goblin of forests. Rather than being included in the major canon of the Slavic belief system, the Likho is traditionally found in fairy tales.

Depictions of Likho can vary: from an evil male goblin to a skinny old woman in black to a giant taller than trees. The only things these three most prominent illustrations of Likho have in common are bad luck. In ancient times, the likho was believed to be a servant of Death. During pre-Christian times villages would conduct a certain ritual during times of epidemic. A feminine-like idol with one eye would be built and then used to kindle a sacrificial fire.
