Poukai (Maori)
The Pouakai, also known as the Hakawai or the Hokioi, is a carnivorous bird from Maori mythology. It is described by Sir George Grey, an early governor of New Zealand, as "a huge black-and-white bird with a red crest and yellow-green tinged wingtips."
The myth may refer to the real but now extinct Haast's eagle: the largest known eagle species. It was able to kill an adult giant moa, an extinct flightless bird, weighing up to 230 kilograms (510 lb), and which had the capability to kill even an adult human.
