Theriocephalus (Medieval folklore)
Theriocephaly (Greek "animal headedness") refers to beings that have an animal head attached to an anthropomorphic, or human, body; for example, the animal-headed forms of gods depicted in ancient Egyptian religion (such as Ra, Sobek, Anubis). The term therian derives from the Greek therion, meaning "wild animal", and anthropos, meaning "man".
It was used to refer to European animal shapeshifting folklore as early as 1901. Sometimes the term "beastman" is used instead. Beastman was used in the 1915 Japanese publication History of the Japanese People from the Perspective of Animals to describe the spiritual belief in animal transformation.
